A different choice for a Pilot Career
In this piece I want to discuss a choice for Airline Pilots which you might or might not have thought about before. If you're looking for something different in your career or perhaps you have not yet been successful in making the move from a regional airline to a major then this is going to be for you. The particular job in question is that of a contract pilot with an emphasis on a commuting contract.
Along with the huge expansion in air travel that many nations in the Asia Pacific region are experiencing there is a growing demand for pilots. Airlines a placing unprecedented orders for new aircraft and naturally need pilots to fly them. With a lot of Eastern nations not being in a position of having a surplus of pilots the sole way to crew their aircraft is to use foreign pilots on a contract basis.
While China is forcefully inducting pilots to fly for their top level airlines they aren't the sole ones, Japan and Korea are two other Asian nations who need pilots. Contracting Pilots is not something new particularly in Japan. The especially grim training requirements for cadets can see an applicant take several years from primary employment until they crew a revenue flight. To solve this Japan's major airlines have employed foreign pilots on a contract basis for decades.
Not like the common progression when joining an airline of beginning as a first officer then upgrading to Captain after a certain amount of time, contract jobs sometimes offer positions for direct entry Captains. This is a serious plus as Captains will continue to maintain around the same pay check and in a number of cases will earn more. Presently many of the large contracts are increasing pilot salary and conditions to attract pilots.
An adaptation to this is to pick a contract which offers commuting. So instead of moving your family to another contract you simply fly home after a certain period and have your days off in one block of time. So far as Airline Pilot Jobs go this is definitely worth your consideration.
The Pilot Salary blog debates many subjects of aviation especially with regard to Airlines and the career of pilots. Airline Pilot Jobs is the most recent article published.
