Question and Answer Kitesurfing
There is just something magical about the water. It does not matter if it is a lake, river or an ocean. Many people love spending time on the water. Some like to leisurely float along while others are looking for thrills, chills and yes...some spills. They view the water as a thrilling challenge to take on. No mere ski boat will do for them. They want to feel the power of the waves beneath their feet. One way that they can do this is through kitesurfing. If you have not had the chance to take on this exciting sport then you are truly missing out. This article can explain what it is and what you will need to get started. You may find yourself rushing out to buy a kite board just so you can get that adrenalin rush.
What are the different types of kites used in kitesurfing?
In kitesurfing there are two categories or types of kites that can be used. The first is a leading edge inflatable kite. The second is a foil kite. In each of these categories there are many different makes and models for the kitesurfer to choose from. In leading edge inflatable kites you can go for the traditional ripstop nylon. You will often hear these types of kites called LEI kites or C-kites. Foil kites are generally made from ripstop nylon but are designed differently. Foil kites can go much farther than LEI kites. Within this category you can choose from an open cell or a closed cell. An open cell foil kite has air pockets that remain open. You have to keep a constant airflow if you want the cells to remain inflated. A closed cell is just like an open cell except, you guess it, the air cells are closed off. The main difference comes down to being able to relaunch from the water. Open cells quickly take on water and make it almost impossible to relaunch. Closed cells do allow the rider to relaunch from the water.
When was kitesurfing developed?
It is hard to pinpoint exactly when kitesurfing was developed. Some believe that it was developed as a way to get around paying a "horse tax" in the 1800's by George Pocock. Pocock used kites to help propel carts on land and boats on water using a four line system that is still in use today. Later Samuel Cody crossed the English Channel on a small boat that was collapsible. He used kites as his power source. Much of the history and developments that lead to kitesurfing came from attempts on land so it really is hard to pick out a direct date that it was developed. It gradually developed from the 1800's onward until present day.
How does the wind affect your kitesurfing experience?
You have to keep in mind that your speed and power is determined by your kite and the wind. If you are kitesurfing on a particularly windy day then you are definitely going to be going faster than you would on a day when the wind was mildly blowing. There are going to be some days when it is dangerous to try to kitesurf due to wind conditions. If you are just learning how to kitesurf you should try to pick days when the wind is mildly blowing so that you can learn how to turn the board and manipulate the kite in the proper manner.
What are some safety rules to follow when kitesurfing?
The number one safety rule you should always keep in mind is vigilance. You have to be aware of your surroundings at all time. If you are kitesurfing on the ocean then it can be very easy to be pulled out much farther than you intend. So pay attention to where you are at. You also need to be aware of what and who is around you. You definitely do not want to surf into the oncoming path of a boat. You against a boat are not a great match and will most likely land you in the hospital or even worse. The second rule for safely kitesurfing is to use protective gear. A floatation device and a helmet can be life saving should you have an accident. The third safety rule is to always kitesurf with a partner. That way if one of you becomes injured there is still someone to go for help.

Pop-cute but tastefully discerning: hip, diverse and always vibrant. It's also
pretty forgettable.
