I need help with some symbols in a circuit diagram!?

The diagram I'm using is the first one called LED TORCH CIRCUIT - 1.
I'm not sure about the symbol that is next to 100u, or what 100u even is? What does 1v5 mean? And could anyone explain transformers in an easy to understand way please?
I'm doing robotics, but am struggling. Any advice would be great, thankyou(:
The symbol is an electrolytic capacitor 100u is the value in this case 100 microfarad.
1v5 means 1.5 volts.
That is an interesting circuit.
